Tribal Brights at Thakoon NYFW Fall 2011
Thakoon collection inspired by Kenya's Maasai tribe. They have interpreted the use of colour into the hair and makeup. Oldie Gilbert was the Hairstylist and Diane Kendal the makeup artist. The headpieces were woven accessories from winter knit hats, the hairstylist said she was inspired by the recycling that goes on in Africa. For the makeup the eyebrows were bleached and red eye makeup was applied to the lids. To finish off the look she applied three different blushers.
Viral Campaign
To celebrate Earth Day, Urban Eco lifestyle site Green jar has released a campaign. This campaign features five different looks, staring America's next top model winner Dani Evans. She is adorned with Maasai tribal embellishments. This is a viral campaign which seeks to raise awareness about the effects of environment degradation of the Maasai culture through fashion, photography and design. The campaign features embellishments made by the Maasai women.
Maasai Tribe
The Maasai tribe are best known for their coloured ornaments, they are Africa's most renowned tribe. Their lives revolve around their large heard of cattle, they moved to Kenya from Sudan and settled in the rift valley in Kenya. Their women wear vast plate like bead necklaces and bangles. The colourful ornaments are mainly created for their beauty, this is a very important aspect of Maasai culture. The warriors colourfully paint themselves with ochre.

Final images
These are the final images of the samples of tribal hair we did in lesson.
Samples in lesson
I used full as earth to create this, I applied the full as earth then I caved out the patterns. When dry I painted the patterns with aqua colour.
Tribal hair in lesson
This is a hairstyle that I did in lesson inspired by tribal hair. I scraped all the hair back and used large round donut to put the hair in. Then I wrapped the crape hair around the bun.

Leigh Bowery Pakis From Outer Space
Leigh was searching for originality and extreme, the vivid colours and ornament of Asian fashion inspired them. He wanted to combine it with seventies Glam Rock clothes, it was a perfect clash. Leigh designed the clothes and Trojan added motifs and makeup ideas. It stayed off his paintings onto Leigh face, giant spots and Sanskrit scrawls.
Charles F. Goldie’s Paintings
Charles F. Goldie’s painted Maori with full facial tattoos, these tattoos are called moko or ta moko. Goldie’s pictures show that the tattoos were in fact carved into the skin. Goldie painted all of these and they were all fascinated by his paintings. I really like the detail in these paintings, they closely show the carvings of the tattoos. Including spirals lines and various patterns all over the face. These were all high ranked people of the Maori tribes. The painting of the lady shows her rank as the tattoo is only on her chin and not on her nostrils or between her eyebrows.
Sampled of Maori in lesson
This is a sample I did in lesson. I used full as earth on the arm and I curved Maori shaped into the arm, then I dried it of with a hair dryer. Whilst drying it created a crackling affect. I found the full ad earth very easy to use and would be practical do a catwalk as it does no rub of easily.
